Aquaculture in Chile: a brief overview
The Chilean Aquaculture industry has recovered well on the back of the covid-19 pandemic with strong results in 2022 and a salmon production volume surpassing the last peak from 2020, with a total volume of more than 1 mio MT of farmed salmonids.
Chile is the second-largest salmon producer globally, with salmon being the predominant species farmed in the country. The well-established aquaculture and fish/seafood processing industry in Chile plays a vital role in the national economy, ranking as the third largest export sector of the country.
Traditionally, Chile's aquaculture industry has been focused on offshore salmon farming in sea-based cages. However, there is a notable shift towards land-based fish farming, driven by sustainability and security requirements from both the market and regulatory authorities. Major stakeholders in the Chilean aquaculture industry have already initiated investments in land-based Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) facilities, replacing lake-based hatcheries and embracing this trend.
Some of the challenges addressed by new legislation in the begining of 2023 are escapes from sea-based fish farms and the high level of antibitics used by the industry. An industry goal is set for reaching a 50% reduction of use of antibiotics by 2025. Furthermore authorities are e.g. addressing waste and sludge handling and disposal within the aquaculture industry as well as traceability within the production cycle.
