Water Talk #9: Water efficiency in the F&B industry – What’s cooking!

Water has always been crucial for the F&B industry. Either as an ingredient, or for cleaning the process equipment and packaging material. In the old days F&B manufactures would actually be proud of having a high water consumption, as this was seen as an indicator of a high cleaning level. Those days are long gone. This watertalk is leading up to the three initiatives, which Danish Export’s Food and Water Tech in cooperation with partners as NIRAS are cooking during Food Tech Herning and the IFC World Water Congress on Oct. 1-3.

Today water efficiency is becoming an important tool in achieving the companies targets on sustainability. A target driving many aims: license to operate, cost and social license to operate. Authorities are e.g. today not only focusing on an industry wastewater, but also on the impact of the water abstraction to the local aquatic environment. Cost is no longer exclusively driven by the ever-increasing cost of water and waste water services, but also from banks and financing institutions - as interest rates are becoming depending upon a F&B company’s sustainability performance from a risk perspective. Retailers are also focusing on the water performance of their products – not from a price premium perspective, but from a perspective of having responsible products on the shelfs, which they would like to be associated with.

Søren Nøhr Bak, Senior Expertise Director in Water & Sustainability for the Food and Beverage industry, Niras A/S, will at this Water Talk be looking into some of the newest initiatives, which are evolving in the F&B industry on the topic of achieving the best feasible performance on water efficiency and why companies are embarking on this journey. Tune in and participate to get ready for Food Tech Herning and the IFC Water Congress.
