A brief of the Faroe Islands fishing industry

The fisheries industry
The fishing fleet in the Faroe Islands consists of about 240 vessels ranging from small coastal vessels to modern sophisticated factory trawlers and the fisheries industry is the most important industry in the Faroe Islands.

The Faroese fishing fleet have seen stagnation in newbuildings for a long period of time but recently a series of  newbuilding projects of trawlers have been announced for Faroese fleet owners to be delivered over the next couple of years. It seems that the newbuildings are on the agenda again together with the willingness for investments.

The main commercial species of fish caught in Faroese waters, are demersal species such as cod and haddock and pelagic species as herring and mackerel. Most of these catches are landed and processed in the Faroe Islands. In distant waters main species are cod and shrimp, which are processed on board large factory trawlers.
The recent wave of investments in the fishing fleet might offer new opportunities on the Faroese market for Danish companies supplying both solutions, technology and fishing gear for fishing vessels but also processing solutions.
The aquaculture industry
The Faroe Islands aquaculture industry is today playing an important role alongside the commercial fisheries industry. It is an industry with a strong commitment to high quality and sustainability focusing today on farming of Atlantic salmon, which is exported to the entire world market.

The industry has stringent measures to minimize the impact of the fish farming on the marine environment.

The Faroese aquaculture industry is composed by 3 vertically integrated companies producing and exporting farmed salmon.

The main focus of Atlantic Fair is on the fisheries and fish processing industry however.
