AquaSur 2022 will also offer the opportunity to participate virtually on the Aquasur Connect platform.

Fiskefarm Afstand

Aquaculture in Chile and Latin America in brief

Chile is known as the second largest salmon producing nation in the world, and salmon is by far the dominant species farmed in Chile. Chile has a well-established aquaculture and fish/seafood processing industry today and the Chilean aquaculture sector is playing a key role in the national economy with salmon products being the third largest export segment after cobber and fruits.

The aquaculture industry in Chile has been dominated by off shore farming of salmon in sea based cages, however the industry in Chile is currently seeing a shift towards land-based fish farming as a substitution for smolt production in inland lakes and rivers. This shift is encouraged by sustainability requirements from both the market and authorities. Large stakeholders in the Chilean aquaculture industry have already started investing in land-based RAS facilities as a replacement for, among others, lake-based hatcheries. There are currently +40 RAS facilities operating and more under construction, proving the tendency towards increased land-based fish farming using RAS technology in Chile.

The Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture under the Ministry of Economy (known as ‘SUBPESCA’) has introduced a number of regulations the last few years related to the aquaculture industry, including online monitoring of 15 environmental and oceanographic parameters at seawater production sites. In part, as a response to the Harmful Algal Bloom-incidents that heavily affected Chilean aquaculture activity and surrounding environment in 2016 and again recently during the spring of 2021 to a lesser extent. Another regulation has strengthened the norms for certification of structural specifications to cages to avoid recurring escapes, and other regulation relates to stricter monitoring and reporting of incidents of contact with mammals at production sites.

SUBPESCA and the Ministry of the Environment in Chile is working towards introducing regulations and agreements together with the industry to increase the transparency of the production and to reduce the environmental footprint of the aquaculture industry. At the same time, the industry stakeholders are actively promoting an increased focus on sustainability throughout the entire value chain.

The aquaculture industry has commited to taking actively part in this process, why the industry currently sees several initiatives and an increased engagement in sustainable production.

In addition, the Covid-19 pandemic has shown that a dependency on manual labour and small, confined workspaces at production sites and process facilities could become a challenge. This could present new opportunities to Danish suppliers of solutions and technology of tomorrow that can allow the Chilean aquaculture industry and the affiliated fish/seafood industry to increase automation, heighten standards, quality and biosecurity measures and improve monitoring and control of the high-value live biomass.

Not only Chile is an interesting market in Latin and South America; other large aquaculture producing countries as Peru, Brazil, Columbia and Ecuador experience growth and at the same time still have large unexploited potential for growth within the aquaculture industry.
