Italy

The market

Italy has an estimated 300 pharma, 700 bio-tech and 4.000 med-tech companies of which a high percentage focus on manufacturing and R&D.

The country has a particular strength in regional, mid-sized pharma companies such as Chiesi Farmaceutici Spa and Menarini Group, which have a strong European focus but have also expanded internationally.

Italy's pharma production reached 34 Billion € in 2019. Italy and Germany are taking turns as Europe’s biggest pharma manufacturer and Italy is leading on contract manufacturing, export growth and other indicators of a highly dynamic and competitive national ecosystem.

The life science industries are strategic to the Italian economy both in terms of GDP and jobs and this will most likely be reflected in the investment priorities currently being defined in Italy and EU.
