The delegation visit is an opportunity to showcase Danish strongholds and innovative solutions in both the pharmaceutical and the medical devices sector to Italian institutions and key NHS key opinion leaders. Moreover, the visit supports the transition to a more sustainable and innovative healthcare service of tomorrow.

Italy, with a population of 59 million people, has one of the best healthcare services in the world with a universal healthcare system that ensures equal access for all. Also ranked among the leading pharmaceutical centres in the world, with double-digit growth for R&D investments. In addition, Italy is an EU market leader in CDMO manufacturing value, and particularly strong within regional, mid-sized companies persistently investing in production lines and new tech solutions to increase efficiency and product quality. In particular, the country is strong within biotech and biologics while investments also focus on precision medicine and digital innovation supported by science parks and innovation hubs as well as R&D centres.

The life science industry is highly prioritised on the political agenda due to its supremacy to the Italian GDP and job market. As a result, attractive incentive schemes of grants and soft loans are made accessible for foreign companies wanting to invest. The Danish Life Science Industry in Italy has been successfully operating for years, employing more than 1,689 people in 2022 and  a total turnover of 778 million euro.

Italy is facing a significant challenge due to an ageing population and the prevalence of multiple chronic conditions, which will require more resources in the coming years and the reorganisation of healthcare services and proximity of care. The Italian NHS, with the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, is investing in the reorganization and modernization of healthcare services to increase efficiency and treatments. These measures include the digitalization of public healthcare services, the enhanced use of healthcare data, as well as the procurement of high-tech equipment and services i.e. patient-centred treatment, outpatient care and remote patient monitoring.
